Search for Music Director

Grace Lutheran Church of Evanston, IL, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), is seeking a part-time music director to work with our Pastor and lay volunteers who work as a worship team.  Located in southwest Evanston, Grace is in an economically and ethnically diverse area, and our members are active in many forms of outreach to the community.  Our values call upon the people of Grace to be affirming, courageous and caring, and we are committed to LGBTQIA+ affirmation, antiracism, and general inclusion.  Our blended worship service includes music from diverse traditions, and we seek a music director who will use their talents to enrich and enliven the ministry of the church.

Music Director Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and accompaniment for cantor and congregation during the Sunday morning worship

  • Collaborate with Pastor, staff colleagues, and worship committee in planning worship services

  • Create and communicate a vision for music ministry, including growth of a diversity of music

  • Inspire and encourage congregants to share musical gifts

  • Direct and accompany instrumental and vocal ensembles (limited at present due to COVID policies)

  • Understand legal and licensing requirements for music selection and manage copyright permissions

  • Manage the music worship budget

  • Understand and operate the sound system for worship services as needed

  • Hire substitute organists and musicians for special services and vacation absences

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant experience in Music or Religious Studies

  • Experienced organist and pianist in liturgically rich worship setting, skill with other instruments a plus

  • Experience directing a volunteer chorus and working with musicians of varying skill levels

  • Familiarity with Lutheran liturgy, hymnody, and theology

  • Technical skills in audio and video including live streaming desirable

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Able to move freely between piano and organ on different levels of sanctuary (stairs)


  • Selecting and preparing music, rehearsals with cantor and/or other musicians, weekly planning with Pastor, personal practice time, and providing musical leadership during Sunday worship expected to take 8-10 hours per week, depending on the church season

  • Must be available for key services in liturgical year including midweek Advent, Lent, Holy Week, and Christmas


  • Salary based on qualifications and experience, starting at $13,000 per year, paid in two-week increments

  • Four Sundays off per year

  • First refusal for participation in weddings and funerals, compensation to be provided by the families
